Horse mad kid, but no horse? No problems!
Our Riders Without Horses program allows not only your child (or children) to learn about horse ownership, care, and riding – but by extension – parents too.
Our Riders Without Horses (RWH) program is perfect for those who are looking at horse ownership and want to get involved in Pony Club prior to taking the leap to committing to purchasing or leasing a horse.
We provide non-horse owners the opportunity to not only learn more about horses and horse riding, but make great fellow horsey friends – all willing to help you out in your new journey.
Both junior and senior membership levels are available for RWH members, but spots are limited each year to a maximum of 12 participants. They are filled on a merit and suitability basis (to match riders with horses). We maintain a wait list and if any spots become available, we’ll contact the next suitable child in line.
RWH members can participate in the program for a maximum of 12 months, before their spot must be made available to those kids patiently waiting for their turn. After the 12 months program has finished for your child, you’re welcome to join as a riding member if you have embarked on horse ownership or leasing, or remain involved as volunteers and supporting members.
Casual Come & Try Days are available if you’d like to see what pony club is all about (fee applies). To ensure our rider to horse ratio remains low, maximising riding time for participants, Come & Try spots are limited and must be pre-booked. Contact us to book in prior to a rally. You’re welcome to come and spectate as well.
At Truganina Pony Club, we live to share our love of horses and riding – that’s why we have our RWH program.
Riders Without Horses Membership Categories
For kids keen to get involved, but without their own horse, can join us under the following membership categories. Slightly higher fees than normal riding membership applies as we are supplying horses, tack, and have to undertake additional cleaning of equipment.
Rider weight limits apply, depending on what horses or ponies are available. Currently we can accommodate children up to 40kg.
Please note: RWH Horses are owned by other members and may not always be available for riding at every event. Horse welfare comes first. We do our very best to have horses for riding available, but some rallies may be unmounted. RWH members can still be involved and learn alongside our riding members.
Our Riders Without Horses program is a little different from many other pony clubs! Many other clubs either do not have a RWH program, or offer only programs which are predominantly unmounted (that means no riding).
We aim to have at least one horse and/or pony available for riding on Rally Days. Often we will have multiple available, however it can vary, as all horses are generously loaned to us from other members. Weight limits for riders also apply to ensure the horse’s/pony’s welfare comes first and foremost.
Our RWH Rally program includes fun interactive activities designed to promote horse and riding knowledge, and help you decide whether buying or leasing a pony or horse is the right decision for your family.
- Horse safety
- Horse care and grooming
- Learning basic riding skills
- Theory – horsemanship, care and riding
- Games (both mounted and unmounted)
Our RWH members can also work towards achieving their Pony Club Certificates (riding skill levels). Our instructors and fellow members are there to help and support you the entire way.

It is very important to note that if your kids are very keen on learning to ride, that participating in the RWH program does not remove the need to have regular riding lessons with a qualified instructor. Pony Club is much more than just learning to ride, it is about teamwork, horsemanship and making friends. Even our riding members have regular lessons from qualified riding coaches or instructors.
We can put you in touch with some great instructors in the local area that offer lessons on school horses.
RWH MEMBER BENEFITS
- You are a member of an awesome friendly club!!
- You’ll meet fellow horse lovers, which is essential if you’re looking to embark on horse ownership. Having access to recommendations for farriers, vets, dentists, bodyworkers, instructors is priceless. As is being able to reach out and get horsey advice when you need it.
- Your kids will be fully insured 24/7 for horse related activities (including external to Pony Club)
- RWH members are eligible to achieve recognised Pony Club Proficiency Certificates
- You may be asked to join in on a Riding Member class during a Rally day, to assist the Instructor or possibly even ride.
- Attend our end of year presentations and break up celebrations and be eligible to receive awards alongside the riding members.
If we can provide you with any information regarding the club or to answer any questions you may have, please feel free to contact us, or pop out to a Rally Day to see what it is all about.
We unfortunately cannot always provide the opportunity for the Riders Without Horses members to be included in a Pony Club interclub or other competition – it all depends on the individual event or hosting club’s rules. We do encourage our RWH Members to still come along to support and assist their team mates where possible, as this is all valuable learning too.
